  • When is the best time of year to seed my lawn in Southern Maryland?

For our region (Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert Counties), the absolute best time for grass seeding is late summer to early fall (typically September through October). During this window, the soil is still warm enough to trigger quick germination, but the cooler air temperatures and increased rainfall reduce stress on the young seedlings. While spring seeding is an option, fall allows the grass to establish a deep root system before the intense heat of the following summer.

  • What is the difference between "overseeding" and "power seeding"?

    • Overseeding involves spreading seed over an existing lawn, usually following core aeration. This is perfect for thickening up a thin lawn and introducing more resilient grass varieties.
    • Power Seeding (or slit seeding) uses a machine to cut small grooves into the soil and place the seed directly inside. This method ensures maximum seed-to-soil contact and is the preferred choice for renovating heavily damaged lawns or filling in large bare spots where grass is completely gone.
  • How long does it take for new grass seed to grow?

Most high-quality cool-season tall fescue blends we use in Maryland will begin to sprout within 7 to 21 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels. However, "seeing green" is just the first step. It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks of consistent watering and care before the new grass is strong enough to handle regular foot traffic or its first mowing. We recommend waiting until the new blades reach about 3 to 4 inches in height before your first trim.

At SunScape Landscaping LLC, we understand that a thick, vibrant lawn is the foundation of a beautiful home, which is why our professional grass seeding services are designed to tackle everything from minor bald spots to full lawn renovations. Serving the unique climate and soil conditions of Southern Maryland—including St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert Counties—we go beyond just throwing down seed; our comprehensive process involves removing dead grass, loosening the topsoil, and applying high-quality nutrients and mulch to ensure optimal germination.

Whether we are performing core aeration to relieve soil compaction or over-seeding to improve your lawn's density, our expert team provides the customized care and local expertise needed to turn patchy turf into a lush, green carpet that enhances your property's curb appeal.
